How will your practical work answer the research question?

My aims are to create a piece of digital design that will co-inside with the modern book that will hopefully tackle one of the main issues of my essay writing which talked about print media needing to work with the digital field as they can both benefit from each other rather than trying to be each other.

Research

Harry Potter spell book

Abit out there but my younger brother has this 'wonder book' thing which i thought was pretty amazing. This book has plain pages that when viewed through the lenses of the PlayStation, turn it into a VR book of magic that has items to interact with. This concept is a great way to merge digital and print in a way that can be interacted with. Problem about it though if i wanted to work with this, id need some serious knowledge of 3d imagery, game design and coding. other than that, this wonder book is a great place to start

Surface Touchscreen

Similar to the wonder book in a way, Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a next generation user interface which can accurately detect the users finger and what it is touching, creating an interactive touch screen-like system, using objects in the real word. This piece of tech can be revolutionary as it allows you to turn anything into a touch screen that you can copy from, highlight ect. It has huge implactions that could change books for the better. just think, having a piece of tech like this in a library where you can copy key points of text from books to help you with both studies and everyday life, basically out doing the modern scanner you find for computers.

App Design

Renting out some book to help me design an app. the iPhone app design manual has really helped me in terms of app design practice and the design process of creating an app. As i've never designed an app before, this book has been a huge help in terms of what to understand about this practice. then there is the social media book which talks about how to use social media. i booked this one out thinking that it talks about the basics of social media but it mainly spoke about using social media to create a presence for yourself.

Initial ideas

Concept

within my essay, I put quite a bit of focus on the book industry. I looked at both digital and printed books to see how each side faired against each other. One main point was that while the printed medium might be slowing down a bit, its still got an advantage over the digital world. Saying that, both printed and digital books have dropped in sales due to the likes podcast book sites such as audible. My aim is to combine aspects of both mediums to co-inside with each other and to befit from the others advantages.
--------------------
For this i have decided to create a social media platform (app) that will alow users to track the books their reading. To add to this concept, the thought of adding a competitive side to it, as in a point system that you can earn and compete with friends. For example:

1 point : finishing a chapter of a book
10 points : completing the book
15 points : If you complete a series

The idea behind this was to try and get both casual and avid readers to communicate//compete with each other and to engage with more books.

First app layout design

Feedback

Q: At the moment, I'm struggling to choose a logo for my logo for the app. The book app at the moment is called book bug is there any suggestions you can give?
  • A book coming out of a book. like it would an apple
  • Vectored graphic of a bug, Incorporating the book
  • doesn't have to include both parts of the name. could just have a little bug as the logo.
  • perhaps look at the open book pages as wings?
  • book spines making up a bug shape?
  • I think that you should use a simple bug shape so that it doesn't look too immature or mature so that everyone can access the website. Just something so it relates to the name.
Q: I went for a light green colour scheme to try and get the feeling of friendliness to the users. with the colour scheme and the layout, is there aspects that need to be changed?
  • maybe a darker green or a burgendy would relate an old cosy libary? Old, dark, classic colours.
  • different shades of green would work better. use another colour tht contrasts for the colour of the text.
  • I feel until you have made a considered approach to the logo and layout design to leave the use of colour and type because there is the possibility, as good as the name and logo could be, that it dosent work with the variables
  • I feel a fresh, brighter green would make the app seem more modern. Appropriate as this book app is overall really lik the idea through nice to see a mock up of the app, esier to imagine.
  • I think its considered but the text needs to be darker as it looks slightly lighter. I think you can experiment with darker colours with the shadows in the book image.
  • I think the shade of green works in terms of being appropiate to bugs but not books. maybe explore colour combinations
  • I like the green colour as its neutral and fits into the nature of a bug.

Response

  • Revise colour choice as its too light
  • after the feed back sesion I dont like where the project was in terms of the name of the app and the layout i had come up with. I think im going to change the name to biblio as its a one word name thats easy to read.
  • look at the target audience again
  • come up with some other app design

Back to sketching

I had a sketching sesion with this just coming up with some base ideas for how the app might look.

Feedback

  • Can we see some realisms of the app?
  • as you said that your trying to learn how to use dreamweaver to actually make the app but a mock up app would work really well for you
  • I really like the change of the colour scheme   as the darker green works really well for its audience in my opinion
  • I think you had the right idea to change the nameas having book in the title make you instantly think of facebook. Biblio is a nice easy to pronounce name that has a simple logo works well within the app

Mock ups

Evaluation

I’ve had a good time stepping out of my comfort zone as app design is an area compleatly new to me. while i was trying to teach myself Dreamweaver, i would have liked to have created a final working app for submission. I feel like the app furfills my aims fro my essay and my project as it has tried to bridge digital and the pint mediums.

For the module as a whole, its been a stepping stone as its my first piece of academi writing for a good few years and i feel like i takled it head on and (hopefully) produced a written peice thats well informed with the reaserch done for it.
